Small Cars Prove to be the Least Effective in Preventing Whiplash Injuries. Numerous tests were done to measure the performance of the different car seats and head restraints during low speed read end collision, showed that small and nippy motor vehicles which are good for the environment and safe on your pocket for a gas, are also the least safe vehicle. I see it as a balance of things – save the money but expose your life to more risk being seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident or may be even killed. Hayward Whiplash Injuries are very common for small cars.
Most of the cars designed for a city driving that had a chance to be examined achieved a good rating. Only Renault Twingo and the Smart Fortwo achieved an acceptable rating for safety. The funny part is that most of these cars are used in pLaces where the traffic conditions are very heavy. These cars are being driven among huge buses and trucks. Imagine being rear ended in while you are driving this car. Not a good picture.
These cars need a better internal protection for a driver because they are smaller and lighter and less material is protecting the driver from injuries, not that they are avoidable in larger vehicles. These smaller cars, or city cars, are not designed to protect who is driving them. Injured neck during a whiplash injury in this type of vehicle, have to absorb much greater crash energy from a larger and heavier vehicle. If we add bad seat design it is going to get even worse.
Renault seemed to be the safest out of all the manufacturers in terms of safety, gas mileage and comfort. Theu Clio and Modus models are rating fairly good. Small and large family cars like Ford Focus and Mondeno the results were much better – rated as a good or acceptable. BMW 5 series received a rating of a good safety. Volvo has always been the top safety car and had received all good ratings for safety. This is supported by real world injury data which confirms that these seats do produce a significant reduction in whiplash injuries. Volvo continues to be the trend setter in this area. Buyers, must spend more money on this vehicle because of the safety features that were incorporated into this car and thus prevent serious car injuries. Many manufacturers are trying to improve the car seats, by design and safety, in order to achieve a better or more acceptable rating.
