When you get into a car accident, it would sometimes take up to 3 days before you notice some symptoms. Because the swelling of the neck happens gradually, you’d notice that a mild stiff neck a few moments after the accident would turn into a more serious condition where you can’t move your neck due to swelling. Because of this, you really can’t say if the injury you have is not a big deal as it can just flare up a few days later.
It is a general rule to go to an emergency room if you feel sore or shaken. The health professionals would check all red flags such as ligament ruptures, broken bones, brain injury or concussions and nerve damage. Most likely you will be offered to get X-Ray of the injured area or in more severe cases MRI. If none of these symptoms are seen, you will be asked to go home and get some rest, use heat and cold packs, and prescription pain medications. This is the perfect time to go and visit your chiropractor. First 72 hours are very important in your recovery. Chiropractors know how to treat soft tissue injuries and how to get the proper rehabilitation to get you back into shape before you even the accident happened. The chiropractor’s aim is to relieve you of the pain as fast as possible but at the same time to restore back your strength and flexibility.
It’s not only about the health issues that you should think about after a car accident. One other thing you need to think about is with the insurance and liability issue. Someone has to pay for all the medical bills and for the car repair so you have to know how to answer. If you are not sure who is at fault, don’t admit to it. Instead, ask a police to get a police report. Exchange identification, contact numbers and insurance info with the other driver. Also, if your car’s drivetrain or steering wheel is damaged, call a tow truck instead of driving your car home.
Immediately call up your car insurance company and report about the accident. They will then ask you if you’re just fine or if you need to go to a hospital. Don’t say you’re fine because, truth is, you really don’t know yet. Remember, symptoms can sometimes show up a few days after the accident. If you say you’re fine and later on you realize you’re not, this can cause a problem to your insurance claim. Just tell the agent that you’ll see a doctor for a check-up. The insurance agent will also ask if there are any damages to the car and if you have used a tow truck service or a rental service. They would usually pay for the expenses acquired. Usually, they would send out a check to the mechanic directly or sometimes to you directly. For towing and rentals, it’s either they’d pay for it right away or you will just get reimbursed after you provide them a billing statement.
