The chiropractic technique began in 1895 and with its long history it also faced several changes similar with any other forms of treatments. Chiropractic has two main groups namely the straights and mixers. Although both the founder D.D Palmer and his son B.J. Palmer were straights which means that they are strongly against the use of instruments in treating a patient, majority of chiropractors are mixers. Like in Berkeley Chiropractic clinic for example most chiropractors use modern day instruments which are necessary to provide a better diagnosis and treatment results for the patient.
The Straights are chiropractors who still follow the original theories which the father of chiropractic believes. Although the straights are the original or the followers of the original beliefs and techniques of chiropractic, they are now considered to be the minority of the practice. Mixers on the other hand are the majority or contain more followers than straight believers. The group follows a modernize theory of chiropractic practice. This group is open to mixing mainstream techniques with chiropractic theories. Chiropractors who follow the mixers improve theories featuring the use of exercise, massage and physical therapy modalities. Some even use nutritional supplement to help their patients get better. At Berkeley Chiropractic clinic patients are able to receive all the different forms of technique depending on the condition they have.
The differing two groups are one of the biggest internal controversies that the chiropractic care faces. The straight chiropractors theory strongly oppose the mainstream practices like using instruments but B.J. Palmer the son of the founder of chiropractic and known straight chiropractic treatment follower have considered the use of x-rays to help chiropractor determine the patient’s condition properly. Straights are also against vaccination and once were included with the group who oppose the water fluoridation. While the mixers are more leaning towards the mainstream medicine techniques to help their patient, even their group supported the water fluoridation after some of the straight chiropractor points out that the action is incompatible with the chiropractic philosophy.
Berkeley Chiropractic clinic contains a number of straights with mixers chiropractors, though their treatment might differ they still continue to use the core theory of chiropractic which is all diseases had been caused in one way or another by spinal misalignment. Though the straights still follow the same classic treatment when a patient is diagnosed with vertebral subluxation or spinal misalignment, which is to manually correct the spine. The mixers have a new and improve way of treating people with spinal misalignment. Depending on how severe the problem is chiropractor who follows the mixer’s way of treatment will recommend their patient the use of physical therapy modalities, exercises and sometimes even refer for acupuncture care.
Not all the spinal misalignment is that severe in order to have it immediately be put to manual realignment. There are cases where stress and other forms of work might cause some nerve blockage. This is where the mixers would be more reasonable than the straights. This is a continuing battle among the two groups of chiropractic. Even in Berkeley Chiropractic clinic there are some patients who would prefer to have a chiropractor who still continues to follow the classic or the original theory than the mixers.
